In a world where consumers increasingly value products that are natural, produced with social responsibility and with environmentally friendly production standards, it becomes important that the meaning of these concepts are understood.

For the producer it is important to understand the meaning of words like "organic", "animal friendly", "environmentally friendly" and "social responsibility" in practice.  What is acceptable and what is not.

For the consumer it is important that there is a responsible "watchdog" organisation that sets the necessary guidelines and monitors their application.

For the processors and marketers, this "image of the industry" is essential to any promotion that focuses on new consumer values.

The Best Practice reference manual for wool sheep farming in South Africa paves the way.  More so, it is an combined effort by prominent role-players in the wool industry.  It can therefore be expected that it will develop into a responsible instrument forming the basis for the further development of the sheep and wool industry. IWTO SPECIFICATIONS FOR WOOL SHEEP WELFARE

A concise summation of good practice principles for ethical wool sheep production.

The International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO) is the custodian of all wool science and trade regulations.   The current version of the IWTO Guidelines for Wool Sheep Welfare was approved by National Member Committees in 2013 and was compiled under the skilful guidance of Mr. Geoff Kingwill and the IWTO Sustainable Practices Working Group, representing the individual grower countries and technical experts in the fields of animal welfare and veterinary science.

As agreed at the time, the document will be updated every three years, to make sure it remains relevant and features the latest developments in science and technology pertaining to wool sheep welfare.

Draft version of the updated document, now called IWTO Specifications for Wool Sheep Welfare

This version has been updated by Ms. Peta Slack-Smith from AWI and Ms. Joanne Radway from IWTO and again in conjunction with all the grower countries, to incorporate the legal legislation that wool growers adhere to. The fundamental principles in the document, which adhere to the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code, remain unchanged.
