NWGA ASSISTS WITH BASIC SKILLS FOR COMMUNAL FARMERS

Regional NWGA chairpersons, treasurers and secretaries were among those gathered in Queenstown recently to equip themselves with a basic understanding of administration and bookkeeping. NWGA staff members Patti Myburgh and Bonita Francis shared their knowledge and skills over a two-day training period.

All 15 trainees who were in attendance, as well as the Eastern Cape communal chairperson Lawrence Maduna, were given the opportunity to explain how regional meetings were planned and structured and what their own bookkeeping systems looked like. It was also determined that regional constitutions were in place and, according to the chairman of Region 21, Mlondolozi Mnyanga, that the needs of the various regions are often very similar.

The greater part of the training session was spent on basic bookkeeping and, although the practical session proved quite daunting, there were big smiles and thumbs-up given when the trainees’ calculations agreed with that of the sample.

COMMUNAL ROADSHOWS SCHEDULED FOR JUNE

The week-long roadshows held in the five production regions of the Eastern Cape last year provided valuable information to communal farmers on how to understand the complexity of the wool industry and the commodity they farm with.  This event proved more successful than in 2016, with more than 1 000 farmers arriving to learn more about their flocks at Sterkspruit, Maclear, Engcobo, Butterworth and Middledrift in 2017.

This year, the five regional events will be held from 18 to 22 June – details of the districts to be confirmed.

BETTER TOGETHER – THE NWGA AND THE RPO IN THE EASTERN CAPE

The Eastern Cape NWGA and RPO joint annual congress held in March 2018 in Queenstown provided the platform where wool farmers of the Eastern Cape unanimously expressed themselves in favour of the wool industry development fund, which will provide funding for shearer training, the maintenance of predator monitor farms and the distribution of the Wolboer/Wool Farmer, the NWGA’s bimonthly publication.

The congress theme, ”The consumer is best” / “Verbruiker kraai koning”,  set the scene for guest speakers and associated stakeholders to convey positive messages about issues that affect the respective industries. The NWGA’s chairperson, HB van der Walt, said that despite many challenging issues and concerns such as land reform, drought and rising input costs, he still felt positive about the future of South African wool growers.

Guest speaker Paul Lynch elaborated on the fact that the market is currently experiencing a shortage of medium wool (21/22 microns) and he warned producers not to flood the market with short wool. He again put a lot of emphasis on contamination and of avoiding polypropylene.

LUMPY SKIN, BLUE TONGUE AND 3-DAY STIFF-SICKNESS REPORTED COUNTRYWIDE

The following advice has been extracted from the February 2018 report by the Ruminant Veterinary Association of South Africa (Ruvasa):

Insect-transmitted diseases such as lumpy skin, three-day stiff-sickness (ephemeral fever) and bluetongue were reported in many areas of the country. This would not have been the case if the animals had been vaccinated before the rainy season (August). No case of Rift Valley fever had been reported. According to Dr Faffa Malan, farmers are sitting on a time bomb as many animals have never been vaccinated and most flocks and herds are highly susceptible to these diseases.

Cryptosporidiosis, coccidiosis, E. coli, rotaviruses and coronaviruses are still causing serious disease outbreaks on many farms. It is so important to follow biosecurity measures and good hygiene practices. Tick-transmitted diseases (African and Asiatic redwater, anaplasmosis and lumpy skin disease) were responsible for numerous mortalities in February.

Dr Faffa reminds farmers to vaccinate their heifers aged between four and eight months against brucellosis.

Information from the February report is used to promote food security, food safety and to assist farmers farming with production animals to farm economically, i.e. to produce more and curb losses. Click here https://www.ruvasa.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/2-Monthly-disease-report-February-2018.pdf for the comprehensive report.
