OUTBREAKS OF RIFT VALLEY FEVER

The NWGA has taken note of the outbreak of Rift Valley Fever in the Free State and is concerned on the impact it may have on the small stock industry and especially wool exports.

Dr. Claudia Cordel, a veterinarian from Execuvet who conducts research on Rift Valley Fever as part of a team of international experts, is urging farmers in the vicinity of the outbreak, to vaccinate their animals urgently with inactivated vaccine to protect their flock from the disease.

Preventive measures against Rift Valley fever
To lower the risk, all non-pregnant ruminant livestock should be vaccinated in the coming winter. For longer term security, vaccinate all breeding replacement livestock before breeding each year as a minimum measure, since it is likely that in most cases effective immunity will be lifelong.

Farmers are strongly advised to contact their local veterinarian to decide on the risks, the correct vaccines to use and the best vaccination schedule for their farm. Do not use unregistered products that claim to be vaccines, they are illegal.

NWKV OPGEWONDE OOR BELANGSTELLING IN REPRODUKSIEGROEPE

NEW ROYAL BABY WRAPPED IN MERINO WOOL SHAWL

When the latest addition to Britain’s royal family made his first appearance on the steps of St. Mary’s hospital in Paddington, he was wrapped in a white knitted shawl made of Merino wool.

The Nottingham-based company GH Hurt & Sons made the shawl. It has also made shawls for all the babies in the family for the past 70 years. The Queen first bought a blanket from this company in 1948 for the first public appearance of her son, Prince Charles.

Kate Middleton subsequently chose the same brand and style of blanket for her older children, George and Charlotte.

THIRD YEAR IN WHICH THE NWGA IS TEACHING LEARNERS ABOUT WOOL

The NWGA head office was again approached by Cotswold Primary School in Port Elizabeth to teach their grade 2 learners about wool.

In addition to the presentation on wool, the importance of reading was emphasised and the fact that reading increases one’s general knowledge was explained. An e-story, “Where is the Green Sheep?”, was read aloud by all the children and some of the high-frequency words were translated from English into Afrikaans and Xhosa.

A PowerPoint presentation portraying images of sheep, the sheep farm, the importance of the sheep dog, with an explanation of why it is necessary to shear sheep and a video clip in which a blowtorch is pointed at a man wearing a woollen T-shirt, with the flames searing his T-shirt but not piercing his skin, took the learners on a visual tour of a sheep farm.

SHEARING SHED FOR DESERVING FARMERS

The district of Mount Fletcher was a hive of activity at the end of April when a large crowd gathered for the launch and official opening of the Utloanang shearing shed.

Wesbank, the institution that funded the shearing shed, had been so impressed by the management of the community that they had no difficulty in choosing where to allocate funding.

The Utloanang Wool Association was established in 2012 by a few farmers from nearby districts who wanted to produce quality rams, ensuring quality lambs. The 15 members, under the leadership of Mmhe Mapuso, produced 16 bales in 2012 and more than doubled the volume to 36 in the past season. The members participate actively at all NWGA regional and inter-regional events and this association was elected as the overall winner in a previous flock competition. A flock selection was also conducted, after which some farmers got rid of their kempy ewes and bought quality ewes with the aim of improving wool quality.

Currently, the NWGA  is collaborating with Eastern Cape Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR), the RPO and the Humansdorp Cooperative to assist farmers and surrounding shearing sheds.

NOORD-KAAPSE WOLKWEKERS WIL JONG BOERE BY ORGANISASIE BETREK
