The Dept. of Agriculture launched its first awareness campaign in 1993 to rid farms of illegal and redundant chemicals. This may give you an idea as to what could still be on the farms. Many more chemicals have since been prohibited in terms of Section 7 (bis) of Act 36 of 1947, Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Stock Remedies, Agricultural Remedies Act, which may still be on farms.

No farmer or individual will be prosecuted for being in possession. All we plead is to get rid off and hand in the chemicals. This is the last such exercise. The tentative cut off date still to be verified is 31/01/2012. The chemicals to be handed in at Sundays River Citrus Co situated at Kirkwood.

The programme will be controlled and organized by the Directorate Hazardous Waste Management. Money from the World Bank has been allocated for this project.

The collection thus far has yielded fairly good results; Limpopo Province approx 120 tons, Free State approx 75 tons, Western Cape approx 80 tons. The Dept. of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) is therefore appealing to farmers to make the collection in the Eastern Cape a good one.

Hendrik Botha, Manager SA Team

Upon invitation from New Zealand Merino Shearing in Alexandra as well as Western Australia Sport Shearing, the SASSF send two machine and two blade shearers to participate in these events. It was the first time ever that SA participated in two Tri Nations competitions. The team, with Hendrik Botha as Manager and Eric Truter as judge, departed for NZ on the 23rd of September.

The Federation appointed two additional machine shearers to go to NZ. The reason and planning behind sending four machine shearers to NZ, is for them to stay in NZ after the Tri Nations to gain experience in the shearing of cross breed sheep as well as to attend a course in the shearing of cross breeds. The machine shearers will stay in NZ until after the Golden Shears World Shearing Championships, which starts on the 29th of February 2012 in Masterton. The shearers will participate in a number of competitions after which the two who will compete in the World Championships, will be appointed on merit.

The SA Team performed very well during the 50th Merino Shearing Competition in Alexandra. The Tri Nations competition, the first ever where three countries had a team each of two blade shearers and two machine shearers, shearing simultaneously on the same shearing platform, was extraordinary. The National Anthem of all three countries was played before the competition, in which New Zealand won and SA was in second place.

During the Tri Nations Blade Shearing Competition, Zweliwile Hans won and Mayenzeke Shweni took the second position.

Our machine shearers performed very well with good quality shearing although they are slightly slower than the Kiwis.

During the senior machine shearing event, Themba Khoza came in third, but he gained valuable experience.

During our visit the shearers were able to practice shearing merino sheep with a lot of pleats, but with good quality fine wool.

Alexandra celebrated the 50th Merino Shearing Competition during a historical dinner to which all previous winners of the competition were invited. All the winners were introduced to the other guests, Ian Rutherford, a winner in the 1960’s gave an overview of the competition in the past. Only two shearers won both New Zealand’s biggest competitions over the last 50 years, which once again confirm the difference between shearing merinos and the cross breeds. Both shearers attended the dinner.

Our 4 shearers practiced for three days on large, somewhat pleated merino ewes in Western Australia as well. Australia hosted their annual championships during the Royal Perth Show. Six teams representing the six provinces of Australia, as well as the New Zealand and SA teams participated. The Tri Nations in Australia received huge publicity from the press as well as television and the event took on a different form to that of the one in NZ. Blade and machine shearers competed in separate events. SA won the blade shearing and took third place in the machine shearing. Mayenzeke Shweni won the blade shearing open event in AU.

It was a privilege to be guests in AU and NZ, and our shearers gained valuable experience with international participation. I am planning for a Tri Nations Competition to be hosted in SA, during the 2013 SA National Sheep Shearing and Wool Handling Championships. I am confident that this unique competition can be hosted with great success in SA.

Once again our sincere appreciation to our sponsors Cape Wools, National Lottery and Mutual and Federal Agri for their generous contributions towards our attending the Tri Nations. Our shearers received valuable exposure.

TERRY SIM

10 Oct, 2011 04:00 AM

NOT only has lucerne been found to give lamb a vitamin E and iron boost, increasing its retail shelf life, but the right genetics can also improve meat colour stability.

Retailers face millions of dollars in markdown losses with meat that loses its attractive red colour sooner, but Victorian research has confirmed industry knowledge that increasing vitamin E and iron levels in lamb can lengthen shelf life based on meat colour by at least one day.

Department of Primary Industries senior research scientist, Eric Ponnampalam, predicted that retailers’ profits could increase by as much as five to 10 per cent if vitamin E levels were increased before slaughter.

“This would also benefit producers who would have a higher value product which could ultimately increase retailer demand,” he said.

Meat and Livestock Australia’s lamb and sheepmeat research and development manager, Dr Alex Ball, said retail meat colour was a heritable trait, with meat from the progeny of some rams having extended shelf life based on meat colour.

Sheep Co-operative Research Centre (CRC) research has indicated that selection can alter retail meat colour stability and result in lamb that is less susceptible to browning during retail display.

Sheep CRC collaborator at Murdoch University in Western Australia, Professor David Pethick, said it was not understood how or why the expression of meat colour heritability worked, and it could be about 18 months before sires would be given an estimated breeding value for retail meat colour.

Dr Pethick said breeders collaborating with the Sheep CRC’s Information Nucleus flocks already have research breeding values for the trait, but five years of data and 10,000 records were needed to establish a breeding value with some degree of accuracy.

The Sheep CRC said for lambs finished under dry feed conditions that have not been supplemented previously, the addition of vitamin E to the ration will restore meat vitamin E concentration to a level that is adequate for good shelf life.

The recommended feeding rate for this is 250ppm for the last two to four weeks prior to slaughter, but it should be costed.

Dr Ponnampalam said lambs fed on a green grass diet were likely to have higher contents of vitamin E and haem iron in their muscle tissue than those fed on grain.

Supplementing the lambs’ diet with quality hay such as lucerne or chicory could increase vitamin E and iron levels. About 300-400 grams of quality lucerne hay for six to eight weeks before slaughter was needed to lift vitamin E levels to satisfactory levels in lambs not grazing green pasture.

“Our research found that the rate of deterioration in the meat’s colour and taste was reduced when the lambs had higher volumes of vitamin E and iron in their muscles at the time of slaughter.

“In fact, many of the grains that are fed to lambs can deplete the levels of vitamin E in the muscle,” Dr Ponnampalam said.

“But these levels can be restored and increased through simply replacing a portion of grain supplement by quality lucerne hay.”

Dr Ponnampalam said more research was needed to establish a test to determine which animals need supplementation to boost vitamin E and haem iron levels in meat.

The Sheep CRC Information Nucleus comprises eights flocks of ewes across Australia, with a total of 5000 ewes, mated to 100 industry sires annually for five years to generate a diverse range of phenotypes and massive amounts of genetic information to develop new and improved breeding values.

The Campaign for Wool was initiated in October 2008 by His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, who had observed that the wool industry was facing enormous and unprecedented challenges. The price of wool had plummeted to the point where farmers were being paid less for their sheep’s’ fleeces than the cost of having them shorn. At the same time, sheep numbers were declining across the world, from Britain to Australia and New Zealand, and some farmers were losing confidence in the future of the wool industry.

A parallel threat came from new man-made synthetic fibres, often oil-based, which were providing stiff competition in the areas where wool had traditionally triumphed – fashion, carpets and insulation.

Official launch

Following meetings with various stake holders, the campaign was officially launched in February 2010. The main players are representatives of the International Wool Textile Organisation, representatives of the British Wool Marketing Board, representatives of Australian Wool Innovation, and key industry figures from the National Sheep Association, New Zealand, Norway and important sheep producing nations of the world.

The Campaign also embraces leading figures from the fashion industry, the decorating and design industry, the wool carpets industry and the world of insulation and building. The Campaign works closely with manufacturers and retailers across the world. It is also multi-national, multi-sector and inclusive, and tries to embrace all sections of wool users from the very largest companies to specialist artisans.

The Chairman of the Campaign for Wool is John Thorley OBE, a former Chief Executive of the National Sheep Association who also Chairs the Prince of Wales’ Campaign to popularise mutton, among several other countryside institutions. Within weeks of launch, plans for the Campaign’s first Wool Week in the UK were well advanced.

Consumer-facing and retail-driven, the October 2010 Wool Week signed up 70 fashion brands, half a dozen national department stores and almost 1 000 carpet independents to participate in the Campaign. For a week, special window displays were devoted to wool merchandise across the country, including in Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, Marks & Spencer, Liberty, House of Fraser, Debenhams and Jigsaw.

Is it working?

Since its launch, the campaign it has devised numerous initiatives to raise the profile of wool. In PR terms, favourable coverage of wool in national newspapers, magazines and on radio and TV has been boosted significantly, and there are indications that consumers are responding with a greater respect and demand for wool.

The second UK Wool Week took place last month, while International Wool Week in the Northern Hemisphere kicks off in October. It will feature an ‘Avenue of Wool’ in Spain created by famed creative director Estrella Archs, featuring a spectacular magical world of wool representing heaven and earth. Organisers said that the scene will be set to “culminate almost another world and leave a unique impression of wool with the viewer.” In addition, retailers throughout the Salamanca area will promote wool in stores and celebrate the natural fibre in their own way.

Other International Wool Week highlights will include:

Sheep in downtown Tokyo.

Special wool fashion commissions across Amsterdam in partnership with Maison de Bonneterie.

Elements of the Wool Modern exhibition, combined with special German commissions displayed in the windows of Alexanderplatz Galeria Kaufhof in Berlin.

A woolly-trail spread throughout Oslo for local consumers to follow.

A series of web sites have been launched providing more information on activities in some of the key participating countries.

WOOL Week 2011, the annual culmination of Campaign for Wool’s efforts to raise awareness of wool, continues its celebrations with the launch of ‘Wool Modern’.

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall were joined by representatives of the wool industry, as well as figures from the worlds of fashion and interior design at the official opening of the Wool Modern exhibition in London last month. The royals were accompanied by Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth and his wife Livia, a keen advocate of sustainable fashion. Other guests included Dame Vivienne Westwood, Lily Cole, Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Giles Deacon, Lady Amanda Harlech, Henry Holland, Jasmine Guinness, Katie Grand and Nicholas Kirkwood.

“Wool is one of the world’s great natural fibres, famous for its versatility and comfort – warm in winter, cool in summer,” said Dame Vivienne Westwood. “I do believe that because it is such a luxury fabric that its status will increase. People will not want man-made fibres anymore and luxury will be seen in the great traditional, natural, fibres.”

Celebrating wool in the 21st century, Wool Modern showcases the aesthetic, environmental and technical benefits of wool with fashion pieces, installations and products. The exhibition delves into the archives of designers such as Thierry Mugler, Yves Saint Laurent, Giles Deacon and Paul Smith. There is also a display of pieces from UK knitwear designers Mark Fast and Craig Lawrence, womenswear designer Simone Rocha, artist Isabel Berglund’s Queens Chair and a specially created Brintons carpet designed by Erdem.

Over 150 companies have joined the Campaign for Wool to date, pledging their support to inform over 165 million consumers of the natural benefits of wool. Last year, over 850 UK stores joined the campaign to promote Wool Week.

The first International Wool Week was to take place this year from October 3 to 10, with events taking place in Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Netherlands, Japan, Germany and Norway.

RPO NUUS

Daar is ’n aparte entstof teen Wesselsbronsieke by Onderstepoort Biologiese Produkte (OBP) beskikbaar.

Aborsies

Dit is ’n sub-kliniese infeksie in volwasse diere.

• Relatiewe hoë mortaliteit in pasgebore of jong lammers of bokkies.

Daar is minstens tien soortgelyke virusse in Suid-Afrika.

Prozesky.

Alle personeel van Stastieke Suid-Afrika sal ’n ID-kaart by hulle dra.
